A recent study reveals that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing these drugs should be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
