The widespread use of fireworks during Diwali also triggered a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in Lahore on pollutants originating in neighboring India following the festivities.

The dangerously high levels of air contamination in the capital have persisted as a significant issue for fifteen-plus years, with the situation continuing to worsen.

During celebratory seasons, the levels of dangerous airborne contaminants in the environment has been documented to spike to significantly exceeding the most severe levels ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously regarded as the world's most polluted city.

Various Contamination Sources

The problem in the city is caused by a combination of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, dust, building projects, garbage fires and haze from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of Punjab and Haryana.

In these regions, rural residents regularly set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, creating toxic smog that remains stagnant over the capital as colder air sets in.

These hazardous conditions results in elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can even lead to malignancies.

The pollution is projected to be responsible for 10,000 untimely deaths annually in the city.
